THINGS TO DO IN: SORRENTO

0Shares

Perched high above the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula, Sorrento is one of the most scenic and beautiful coastal towns in Italy. With the scent of lemon trees and olive groves almost everywhere, and beautiful Renaissance architecture, Sorrento is a postcard picture.

As a gateway to the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri, you can easily get around to explore the rest of southern Italy. Take a look at these must-see attractions in Sorrento and places of interest nearby.

1. PEOPLE WATCH IN PIAZZA TASSO

Situated in the heart of Sorrento, the bustling square is home to local restaurants and café’s, connecting motorcyclists and pedestrians to the town’s shopping district.

2. SUNBATHE AROUND MARINA PICCOLA AND MARINA GRANDE

Thanks to its clifftop location, Sorrento is not known for its golden sand beaches. But there are a few fishing ports and marinas you can visit such as the scenic and important boat connections of Marina Grande and Marina Piccola. Underneath Via Luigi de Maio is a small secluded bay with beach clubs open to the public. There are loungers and umbrellas, and a few snack bars and restaurants too.

3. SHOP FOR LIMONCELLO

Home of the famous Limoncello, you’ll find reference to this sweet Italian lemon liqueur everywhere. Every souvenir shop offers gifts that are decorated or scented with lemons, from soaps and ornaments to olive oils and candles. You can sample the liqueur in many of the local bars and restaurants too and buy a bottle to take home.

4. VISIT BASILICA DI SANT’ANTONINO

Named after Sorrento’s patron saint, the town’s oldest church is home to his tomb and is found on Piazza Antonino named after him. Inside, you’ll find baroque and Romanesque features, medieval paintings, gilded ceilings and artefacts dedicated to the patron saint.

5. TAKE A DAY TRIP TO POMPEII AND HERCULANEUM

Just 45 minutes from Sorrento, a drive to Pompeii is worthwhile. Visit the ruins from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that engulfed the Roman city in just 12 hours and wiped the population. Herculaneum was also an ancient city destroyed by the eruption. It’s worth getting a guided tour of both so you can learn all about these famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
